Adolescent Skills Training

Adolescent Skills Training Program: DBT & RO-DBT Combined Approach

Embracing Adolescence with Mindfulness and Openness

Adolescence is a time of transformation, discovery, and challenge. At Plum Behavioral Health Services, we understand that navigating the teenage years can be complex, filled with intense emotions, and sometimes overwhelming for both adolescents and their families. Our Adolescent Skills Training Program uniquely integrates the principles of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy (RO-DBT) to offer a holistic approach to adolescent wellness.

What is DBT and RO-DBT?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) focuses on providing therapeutic skills in four key areas: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. It helps individuals understand and accept their emotions, learn to manage stress, communicate more effectively, and navigate relationships.

Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy (RO-DBT), on the other hand, is designed for individuals with overcontrol issues—those who may struggle with emotional expression, social connection, and openness to new experiences. It emphasizes the importance of flexibility, social signaling, and the cultivation of genuine relationships.

Our Program: A Comprehensive Approach

Our Adolescent Skills Training Program is designed to support teenagers in developing the skills they need to thrive emotionally and socially. Through a combination of individual therapy, skills training classes, and family involvement, we address a wide range of emotional and behavioral challenges that adolescents face, including:

  • Emotional sensitivity and intensity
  • Relationship conflicts and social isolation
  • Perfectionism and rigid control over behavior and emotions
  • Difficulty adjusting to change and handling stress

Program Highlights:

  • Skills Training: Adolescents participate in weekly skills training sessions that cover both DBT and RO-DBT skills. These sessions are interactive, engaging, and tailored to the developmental needs of teenagers.
  • Individual Therapy: Each adolescent receives individual therapy to personalize the application of skills to their unique challenges and life situations.
  • Family Involvement: We believe in the power of family support. Our program includes sessions for parents and caregivers to learn skills and strategies to effectively support their adolescent's growth and well-being.

Skills Covered Include:

  • Mindfulness: Learning to live in the present moment and increase self-awareness.
  • Distress Tolerance: Developing strategies to tolerate and survive crises without making them worse.
  • Emotion Regulation: Understanding and managing intense emotions for better outcomes.
  • Interpersonal Effectiveness: Navigating relationships and assertiveness while maintaining self-respect.
  • Radical Openness: Cultivating openness to feedback, flexibility in behavior, and enhancing social connectedness.
